About Markham Elementary School
Established in 1929, Markham Elementary School was named after the contemporary poet Edwin Markham, favored writer of the school board president at that time. Markham, when learning of the honor, wrote a poem to the school community entitled "Outwitted" which has become the heart and theme of the school.
Outwitted
He drew a circle that shut me out -
Heretic, rebel a thing to flout.
But love and I had the wit to win
We drew a circle that took him in!
Today, Markham School, nestled in the Beverly Heights area of Mt. Lebanon, continues to value that circle of inclusion, and has expanded the vision and mission of the school to include five tenets guiding our educational philosophy with students. These tenets make up the Markham Mission:
- Effective Communicators
- Productive Workers
- Responsible, Respectful Citizens
- Resourceful Thinkers
- Inspired Life-Long Learners
